Camila Cabello rules 2018 MTV Video Music Awards

Pop star Camila Cabello ruled the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night (20Aug18) by taking home the top honours for Video and Artist of the Year.

The former Fifth Harmony star was named Artist of the Year midway through the New York City show, and ended the night by topping Drake, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars and Cardi B, Childish Gambino, and Beyonce and JAY-Z, to score the top award for Video of the Year for her smash hit Havana, featuring Young Thug.

She was presented with the final prize from Madonna, and the "surreal" moment almost overwhelmed Camila.

Bowing down to the Queen of Pop, she gushed, "Madonna, I love you so, so much... You've inspired me so much and ... this is a surreal moment. Seriously... I can't believe (it)."

Camila went on to dedicate the accolade to the Material Girl hitmaker.

Meanwhile, new mum Cardi B, who returned to the spotlight for the first time since giving birth to daughter Kulture last month (Jul18), had a trio of reasons to celebrate as she was crowned Best New Artist and landed the Song of the Summer title for her I Like It hit with Bad Bunny and J Balvin.

She also shared in the Best Collaboration win with Jennifer Lopez and DJ Khaled for Dinero.

It was J.Lo's second big honour of the night, as she also made history as the first Latin artist to receive the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in recognition of her career success.

The superstar dazzled fans as she ran through her back catalogue of hits, performing Waiting For Tonight, On The Floor, Love Don't Cost a Thing, All I Have, Jenny From the Block, and I'm Real (Remix) and Ain't That Funny, for which she was joined by her rap pal Ja Rule, all while showing off her dance moves in a sparkling gold bodice.

It was also a big night for Childish Gambino, who scored three awards for his number one hit This Is America, and Ariana Grande, whose song No Tears Left to Cry was declared Best Pop Video.

Other performance highlights at the Radio City Music Hall prizegiving came from Best Hip Hop winner Nicki Minaj, who thrilled fans with a medley of tracks from her new album Queen, and Aerosmith and rapper Post Malone, while rapper Travis Scott ended his performance by declaring, "Rest in peace the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin!"

Madonna also paid a lengthy tribute to Aretha, remembering her as "one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived", following her death on Thursday (16Aug18), aged 76.

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T," she added, referencing Aretha's classic song Respect. "Long live the Queen."
